Starting soon after they are elected or appointed, the Commissioner’s Office helps Members of the House of Commons and public office holders understand and follow the rules that apply to them. It gives them the same information more than once, and in different ways.
- It sends them information about what the Conflict of Interest Act and the Conflict of Interest Code for Members of the House of Commons require.
- It offers educational sessions and online training.
- It assigns each Member and reporting public office holder a personal advisor. Their advisor gives them confidential help and advice during their whole time in public office.
- It communicates a few times a year with public office holders without reporting obligations.
- It gives former public office holders advice on how to follow the Act’s post-employment rules. (There are no post-employment rules in the Code.)
When asked, the Commissioner’s Office also gives general guidance about the Act to people who are thinking about accepting a federal appointment.
